Synoptic Meteorology

Synoptic Meteorology -- (n.) - the presentation of the current weather elements of an extensive area at a particular time
(n.) - senior meteorology class at the University of South Alabama, taught by Dr. Blackwell

If you have kept up with my blog then you know that I am taking Synoptic 1 this semester and let go on the record saying that its the craziest class in the world!

The class is a six-hour credit class and it deserves that many credits. Here is a breakdown of the class...

The lecture for the class is Tuesdays & Thursdays from 11:00 AM - 12:15 PM and the lab is Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday 2:00 PM - 4:05 PM. Each week we get a city selected by Dr. Blackwell in which we forecast for. The city that Dr. Blackwell usually chooses has some type of weather event happening. We have forecasted all over the place including but not limited to: Portland, Maine; Washington DC; Topeka Kansas; & New Orleans, LA. During lab between 2:00 - 3:15 we do the foreasting for the city. We forecast for the 500 mb and 850 mb level and then various items at the surface (such as temp, surface pressure, wind direction & speed, etc.). We forecast 24 hours out from the day of the forecasting.

From 3:15 to 4:05 we listen to a weather briefing done by one classmate, one each lab. The briefing is between 11 to 14 minutes. It analyzes what is going on at the time of the briefing and twelve hours before, and then the forecast for the next 24 hours. After the briefing there is a question time in which other classmates can ask questions about the briefing. Participation is required and if a student doesn't ask a question then points are taken off of their final grade. Once the questions are done then Dr. Blackwell asks questions for about 20 minutes. After the briefing the briefer is debriefed and the grade is given. Each person in class does 3 briefings each semester.

So that is the lecture and lab procedures. Outside of lecture and labs we are given various assignments. We are given things called COMET Modules. These are web-based assignments about a certain topic in which we have to listen to a male/female talk about that topic and then take a quiz about that topic and send the results to Dr. Blackwell. We also get smaller assignments given out about the topics we cover in lecture.

The last assignment we do outside of class are case studies. These are very horrible and take a lot of time. They are huge weather maps (5 total) and each map we certain analyses that we have to do. We get two installments each semester and they are worth 20% of the final grade. The first installment has already be done and a blog post about those will be posted soon.

That is synoptic meteorology course for you. One very crazy course but I have made some pretty cool friends in the class...we have a blast!!

Ugh

So I know that i haven't posted a blog post in quite some time....my fault, well not really. It is school's fault. As most of my blog post have said this semester, I have been pretty busy. However things are slowly calming down and changes are about to take place from now through next semester. For example, as of right now I am going to be sleeping in on Saturday and I don't remember the last time that happened!!

Also for next semester I have learned that I need to drop a few things as I have WAY too much going on in my life. I am weighing everything and deciding on what needs to be drop. So yeah. There you go. For those who read my blog this is just something small that you can read and to wait for the next post.

Until next time....

Word of the Semester: BUSY

So this is probably the busiest semester I have had since I came down to South. Why is it so busy you ask? Well let me tell you...

First of all classes...I am taking the following classes this semester:
- Synoptic 1: 6 Credit Hours
- Computer Applications in Meteorology: 3-4 Credit Hours
- Physical Meteorology: 3 Credit hours
- Foundations in Math: 3 Credit Hours

Synoptic 1 alone equals a whole semester work for 3 classes. We have to do briefings, forecasts, case studies (which deserves a blog post all for itself), and COMET modules....oh COMET modules...not fun.

So on top of classes I have work, which when I started to work at the campus bookstore it seemed like a pretty easy job. That is of course when it is not football season. Football season + Bookstore = Stress & Headache. Don't get me wrong I enjoy my job but some days I just don't want to go into work. We work at every football game which is a 12-13 hour day and it is pretty much non-stop. Luckily there is only three more games left in the season...but they are supposed to be big games which means bigger crowds and more craziness.

Let's update...we have school and work. Now for my extracurricular activities which include two clubs: BCM & Meteorology Club. First up is BCM...I love the BCM and most everything associated with the BCM. I am on the Leadership Team in which we have 3 main groups that deal with certain events. My group deals with social events like "Halloween" Party, Homecoming, etc. Basically I am in charge of the "Halloween" party and Homecoming, which is cool but I might of took on too many tasks. After November 6th I'm pretty much done with planning BCM events for the rest of the semester. Now onto Meteorology Club...as with the case studies mentioned above, the MET club is a blog post in itself. Just to sum it up though, I am a co-coordinator for SeCAPS which is a conference we do each February. As February gets closer and closer, the busier us coordinators get, for planning that conference. We are actually ahead of schedule right now which is VERY good. However it is always at the back of my mind.

So thats all that is going on in my life at the moment. Once you break it down it is not that busy but there are moments when I just want to sit and do nothing and not think about anything. However, I must go to bed so I can wake up early tomorrow morning and register for classes...fun. Good night all.

Until next time....

Weekend Review

This past weekend I decided to stay in Mobile and not do the BCM trip to Dothan because I needed a break. It was a rough week with school, work, and personal things. Instead I stayed in Mobile and did whatever I wanted pretty much. Here is what I did...

Friday:

School and work...not too exciting. Went to CiCi's Pizza with Braden and it was SOO good!! I haven't had CiCi's in forever! I had some of their mac & cheese pizza, my favorite. Afterwards Braden came over to my room and we played some Super Mario Brothers, which any time Mario is involved it is a good time. He went to a softball game and did some cleaning and stuff and went to bed early.

Saturday:

I worked at 8 AM (yeah....not my best idea) to do inventory at the Bookstore's "downtown" storage which should be renamed to our football merchandise storage because that is all that is down there. Well if you have ever had the privilege to go down there (which I don't recommend), you would know that it is totally disorganized and a total mess!! We stayed there until 1:30 PM and did about half of the storage room. After that I went to Taco Bell to get some lunch and then the thunderstorms arrived which was a true blessing!! The wettest city in the US (Mobile) hasn't had much rain in a few weeks and we needed it. I watched the storms form on the drive to Taco Bell and then it poured once I got back to the room. I continued to watch the rain out the window and then on RADAR (which is one of the channels on the digital cable...totally excited about that!). I finished watching the "Avatar: the Last Airbender" series which is a pretty cool series! I enjoyed it very much and the ending was EPIC!!! After that I went to bed.

Sunday:

Woke up and went to church and then came back and ate at the lovely Market for lunch. Started on homework and did laundry at the same time....talented I know. Then went to visit Miranda at Cpt. D's and stayed there for about 3 hours talking to her and catching up on things. It was truly enjoyable. Came back and played some Super Smash Bros. and then went to bed.

Might not seem fun to some people but it is the perfect weekend I needed to survive the rest of the semester. Oh and FALL BREAK IS NEXT WEEKEND!!! Thank goodness!!!

Side Note: I'm thinking about redesigning my blog....what you think???

Until next time...

Few Minutes

It is Tuesday morning of the busiest week of my life! I got up at 8:15 AM and I'm a little ahead of schedule so I figured I would blog real quickly.

This semester is totally different than the ones before it. It seems that people have changed, the campus has changed, the BCM has changed etc. Change is hard to deal with especially with me. I like things to be structured and have everything laid out in front of me. I kind of expected of this semester to be different but not this different. It is like I ran into a brick wall face on and didn't see the wall coming. I have had a hard time in dealing with the change and every time I feel like I got the hang of something life throws a curl ball at me. I hope the curl balls stop soon...

Well I have to go to class now. Until next time...

Life as of Now

This week has just been one of those weeks. It feels like it should be Friday but it is only Wednesday!! School is getting more and more hectic. It seems that everyday I walk into all of my classes they are handing out a new assignment that is due the following week. Work is crazy right now because of football season and soon graduation stuff will be happening...no break for the weary.

On top of school and work there is stuff going that is making me lose focus and it would take three pages to explain everything. It is nothing bad, just that I'm wrapped up in the middle of it all. Here are a few thoughts though on what is going:

With any major decision it is wise to listen to the opinions of others on what is the right decision to make. However it is okay to take bits and pieces from each person's advice to come up with your own action plan and your own decision. Some people need to learn that not everybody is going to follow their advice and to back off. Don't give advice to someone and then the next day expect that person to do it because most likely they are not going to do it the next day. Especially me...I take my time in making decisions and in pretty much everything I do. I weigh all of the options and then make a decision and act on it.

That is all the venting I'm going to do right now. The other day BJ suggested I create a weather blog and I realized that I have never talked about the weather in this blog. Well that changes today!!

Right now we are in the middle of the hurricane season and the peak of the hurricane season. If you keep up with the tropics then you know that this season is no exception for this time being the peak of the season. In the past 20 days we have four major hurricanes....a major hurricane is category 3, 4, or 5. Currently there is Hurricane Igor (Category 4) and Hurricane Julia (Category 3), as well as Tropical Storm Karl [as seen below]. None of these storms are going to affect the US in a direct way which is very good. Dr. Blackwell (Tropics Specialist & Professor at South) says that he wouldn't be surprised to see a storm form in the Caribbean soon. We shall see what will happen during the rest of the 2010 Hurricane Season.

Until next time...

First Brief of the Year

I'm in synoptic meteorology 1 and it is the "senior" class of the meteorology program and it is where you put all of your knowledge from all of the other classes into one class and apply it to current weather. We have to do a briefing about 3 times this semester and it is a big deal! The briefing is where you get in front of the class and talk about the weather for 10-13 minutes.....for those who know me, know that this is a big deal for me since I don't like to talk in front of people.

Yesterday (Tuesday) I did my first briefing (a practice one that was not graded) and it was not that bad. It takes a lot of time to put it together though...I worked on it from about 8:30 AM - 2:30 PM with a 30 minute lunch break. A forecast for the next 24 hours must be done as well for a pre-selected city from the professor. My city (and the city for the whole week) was Portland, Maine. The city selection is based off of some weather event occurring or about to occur. A cold front was about to move over the city, therefore that city was selected. Last week we had Cherry Point, NC because of Hurricane Earl.

I felt really good about my briefing. I knew most of the stuff that Dr. Blackwell asked me or at least had some general knowledge about the topics. He said that certain charts that I did turned out to be really good and pretty accurate. So good job me on the first briefing...three more to go!

Rainy Weekend

This weekend blew pretty much, at least weather wise.

Friday the BCM had the Church Road Trip where we drove to six different churches and had a 5 course meal, a course at each church. I will admit that I was uncertain about it but after it was over I thoroughly enjoyed it! We had a lot of new freshmen turn out which is a very good thing! We didn't get back until 11:30 and I was exhausted so I went to straight to bed.

Saturday I didn't get up until 10 and it felt wonderful! BJ had to be at work (at the USA Fan Day) at 7 AM and I will a little mad that they didn't ask me to work at since I am second in seniority for being asked to work at special events. Oh well, afterwards I decided that sleeping in was so much better!! I just played video games all day since it was raining all day. BJ, Taylor, and me went to Chick-fil-a for dinner and then to the mall to look in some stores. The mall down here has a Disney Store so of course I went into it! I could work at a Disney store and be very happy with it. While in the store I got the idea (from Taylor) to be a toy story character for Halloween so I think I'm going to be Woody!! Woot woot!

Today (Sunday) BJ and me went to church and they had the moving up day in Sunday School today. The theme for the day was ALOHA Sunday and they served us breakfast....pretty good! It poured all the way to church which was kind of gross. After church we came back and I started on homework and cleaning up around the room. BJ and me then went to the Market (school cafe) and a bunch of old and new BCMers were there so we all sat together and fellowshipped. It was pretty nice to put all of the stress away and just hang out with some pretty funny people. I finished all of my homework afterwards and now I have nothing to do which just feels weird so I decided to blog since Jaclyn (I mean Ms. Tisdale) told me I need to update my blog.

So yeah, woohoo for blogging! Right now I'm listening to a song by Taio Cruz called "Dynamite." I love that song....it sounds so cool! Also I'm tired of hearing music from Train....BJ plays it non-stop......

Anyways, its getting late and I'm a little sleepy and I need sleep for the week ahead. Until next time...

Just the Beginning

Today was the third day of classes and I'm already crazy busy! I am taking the following classes: Foundations in Math, Physical Meteorology, Synoptic Meteorology, Computer Apps in Meteorology. They sound hard don't they? Well yeah they are! I already have two assignments due next week and homework due this Friday. I will be spending a lot of time in Coastal Weather this semester!

On top of just classes I have BCM events and the welcome week events that are wrapped up into one title: 7 Days of Insanity! So naturally it is a crazy week at the BCM with an event almost everyday of some sort. Two more events this week: Outdoor Living Room (Thursday) & Church Road Trip (Friday). Saturday has nothing planned which in my opinion is a good thing so I can catch my breathe a little bit before the craziness starts up again on Monday.

Also on top of BCM events and class, work has been crazy! This is the first regular semester in our new location while the old location is being renovated. People are everywhere and there are times when I just want to go to the back and just sit and not talk to anyone because it is overwhelming when you walk into the store. We are also getting ready for football games which start in ONE WEEK!!!! I got more responsibilities at work since I am now number three in seniority. I will be handling the cash/change at the football games which I'm a little nervous about but I will be fine.

So yeah first week of fall semester is insane but life will go on and I'm looking forward to this semester as I believe it will be a good one!!

Summer Review

Today has been an interesting day and not the best day in my life...

I slept in which felt great (hence why I'm awake now, but still sleepy....makes no sense) but I thought about a lot of stuff today. Here is a breakdown of my thoughts for the day:

  • Moving: I have decided that I'm officially moving from the Grove on July 30th and going to head back to Charleston on the 31st....wasn't quite sure what day i was heading back. Looking forward to a mini-vacation in Charleston!
  • Summer: This summer has pretty much sucked. Between classes, drama, car problems, computer problems, etc, the summer has sucked. I'm ready for it to be over with and to move into the fall semester and have everyone back to Mobile. I miss hanging out with ALL of my friends. I have enjoyed hanging out with those few that are here but I miss everyone else.

So yeah. It has been a busy, hectic, and lame summer but there were a few good memories in there:

  • Toy Story 3 - LOVED IT!!!!!
  • Birthday - I have some cool friends in Charleston & Mobile that love me and threw me a great birthday!
  • Percy Jackson & The Olympians: very good series and anxious to finish it....just bought the last book today.

That's my summer in a few words and now it is time to finish it off with finals and then a mini-vacation visiting friends and family in CHS and reading "The Last Olympian!"

POTC 4!

In case you haven't heard, they are making a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie entitled: "Pirates of the Caribbean: Stranger Tides." It is due to realease summer 2011 as long as so many other movies!

I'm writing about this because at ComicCon 2010 (a 3-day event of news about super heroes, scifi, horror galore...special news on super hero movies are to be released tomorrow so expect a blog report on that!), Disney releseased a teaser for the new film with Jack Sparrow talking to the ComicCon attendees. It has leaked to the internet and here it is:

Can't wait until next Summer.

Until next time...

X-Men: First Class

I am really considering a movie blog. Recently I have been keeping up with movie news from moviefone.com and one movie that has started to film, that catches my interest is X-Men: First Class.

It is another origin movie just like 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine.' This one looks at the origins of two x-men characters: Magneto & Professor Xavier! Both have great origins, so I'm looking forward to the movie. What really catches my interest is the actors playing in the movie. Here is a breakdown of those on board for the movie (thus far, more may be added):

  • Magneto: Michael Fassbender
  • Xavier: Jame McAvoy
  • Beast: Nicholas Hoult
  • Banshee: Caleb Landry Jones
  • Havok: Lucas Till
  • Emma Frost: Alice Eve
  • Mystique: Jennifer Lawrence
  • 'Villain': Kevin Bacon....the most interesting by far. the villain is being kept secret for now but rumors are spreading that it might be Mister Sinister.
So it looks like its going to have a lot of good characters. This movie comes out next year...June 3, 2011 is the set release date. A lot of people can be added before then and I hope more character are, the more the merrier!

Gulf Coast Oil Spill

This blog post is mainly for those who do not live on the Gulf Coast...

As everybody who knows, there is an oil spill just off the coast of the Gulf Coast and it has hurt everything related to the gulf coast. If I was to write everything about it, then the post would be several paragraphs long. I would just like to discuss a few things...

What is the beaches like right now??? That is the question I get from most of my friends in SC. Well I have not been to the beach since the oil has washed up on Alabama beaches but I have been meaning to. However I have had friends who have gone and I can just relay what they have said. Right now (as of last Saturday) there is no oil on the beach but you can smell the oil in the air. We are allowed to go into the water, even though there is a health advisory, and after you get out you smell like a car engine. If you dig deep enough into the sand you might find a thin layer of oil that was not able to be cleaned up. That is pretty much what the beaches are like here in Alabama. Of course it might be different if you go to FL, LA, or MS.

The second thing I would like to talk about is the relocation of the sea turtle eggs/nests that are on the gulf coast shores. In Charleston the sea turtles are an important part of the culture so this caught my interest. They are going (and have some already) to move the sea turtle eggs to the Atlantic Coast where the oil will not affect them. Sea turtles eggs are very fragile so they are moving them in styrofoam containers. The only problem they might run into is that according to science tests and observations, sea turtles tend to return to the place where they were born to lay more eggs. So they might return to the Gulf coast and to the oil. I read this on cnn.com so you might want to do a search on that site if you would like more info.

Well thats all I really wanted to talk about in regards to the gulf coast. If you have any questions then just let me know.

summer thus far

Well the Summer is coming to an end soon and I must say that the summer has not been the best of my 21 years of being alive. The movies that came out this summer have been alright, nothing too special (Toy Story 3 was the only exception), not much to do on the weekends since everybody is out of town and/or busy, work has been alright....a few things here and there, grove sucks. My birthday was pretty fun and thats pretty much the only highlight of the summer. As for the rest of the summer I do have a few things to look forward to:
  • Moving out - finally get out of the Grove...July 31st can't get here soon enough!
  • Going home - I will be headed to Charleston for about two weeks before I have to return for BCM leadership training and the start of the semester
  • Gillis - Gillis is coming back from Alaska next weekend for a short while. Get to hang out with them...haven't seen him in a year!

Thats the rest of my summer................................

past week & weekend plans

So far I have had a lot of blog posts about movies....maybe I should do a movie blog??? hahaha.

Well anyways, it has been a very very long week. From here until the end of the summer it is going to be hectic with school work getting busier and busier. However, back to the present...this week I have had a lot on my mind with life in general. I must admit that the summer has not turned out to be what I thought it was going to be. I figured it would be a little more fun being in Alabama with all of my college friends but things have turned around and it is a little boring around here. Sure when I do hang out with my friends I have a blast but I'm beginning to miss home a little and my friends at home.

It stinks living 10 hours away from home. I can't go home on weekends like this one when we have a 3-day holiday. I miss so many cool events at church and major events in my friend's lives. blah.

Back to topic...so yeah the summer has not been what I expected it to be. I go to class and work and then come back to the room and do school work. I will say that I have eaten healthier recently. I'm finally realizing that eating/cooking in my room saves money and makes me healthier, which is a good thing. So far my summer is pretty average and not a real special summer.

So yeah that's mostly my feeling on life right now. I'm going to lunch with Humama tomorrow who is town...pretty stoked about that. A small taste of Charleston has come to Mobile to help me make it through the summer. Also going to see the LAST AIRBENDER tomorrow. I have heard that it wasn't that good but I'm hoping for the best. On Sunday I'm playing the piano at church and no class on Monday. Looks like a good weekend to me!

Summer Movies 2010

So the Summer season is the time when movie companies release their biggest movies to get the most money.

This summer movie season is no exception!

Iron Man 2: started out the season with a bang. This sequel had as much action as the first movie and the plot set up for upcoming Avengers movie.

Robin Hood (2010): I personally didn't see this movie but I heard that it had great action and a good story. Will probably Redbox or rent it from Blockbuster when it comes out.

Shrek Forever After: The 4th and final chapter of the Shrek films! I must say that the Shrek movies were getting a little old and needed to end. This wrap up of the story was good and funny. Definately better than 2 & 3.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time: This Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer film didn't look in theaters so I didn't see it. Really haven't heard much about it.

A-Team: This remake of the classic tv series looks pretty good. I have no desire to see it. So if anybody else wants to see it then I will go with them.

Karate Kid: I never really liked the first three karate kid movies so me seeing this one is most likely not going to happen.

Toy Story 3: This is the movie that I have been waiting for all year long. I loved Toy story as a kid and I still am a big fan. This movie (which I just saw, hence this blog post) is well written and has a lot of funny parts in it.

Twilight: Elipse: Blah. Will rent it for $1 when it comes out. Enough said.

The Last Airbender: This is the second most anticipated movie for me. I saw an episode of this tv series at BJ's place and have been a fan since then. It is about a boy who can control the four elements. The graphics look good and so does the story. July 2nd baby!!

Inception: This is a film by Christopher Nolan (directed Dark Knight) so it most likely will be good. Looks a little weird but I will still see it.

So thats my 2010 summer movie season. 2011 has some good movies coming out: Pirates 4, Captain America, Green Lantern, Thor, & the Avengers. They are calling it "Superhero Summer" which fits it very well!

random

So I went shopping tonight at Walmart and I got some pop-tarts and waffles. I absolutely love breakfast food. It is probably my favorite meal of the day. Here is a breakdown of my favorite breakfast foods:
  • Pop-Tart: Frosted Cherry
  • Oatmeal: Banana Bread
  • Cereal: Fruity Pebbles
  • Grits: Cheese Grits
  • Syrup foods: Waffles but I LOVE LOVE LOVE McGriddles from McDonald's!!

So yeah, I love breakfast.

Also a friend of mine (Jerrika) just went to California (I'm guessing recently) and uploaded some photos. I was looking at them and saw that she had taken a few photos with some of the celebrity's stars on the walk of star thing. I'm not fully sure what it is called but I have decided to add that to my bucket list: to walk along the famous walk of Hollywood stars. I'm going to do it when I visit California one day.

I can't wait for this Friday as it is the release date for TOY STORY 3!!!!! I'm seeing it at 7:15 PM Friday. I will post a blog about it on Saturday (if I remember).

Well it is getting late. I shall write later....

this past semester

What a semester! It has been a very crazy roller coaster ride with school work and social life! Started out with a bang with me asking out Kristen to be my girlfriend and she said yes! I enjoy being around her and hanging out with her. My friendships have grown closer to several friends and I love hanging out with my friends.

This is the most busiest semester I have had since coming down to South. I look the following classes:
- Physics 2
- STATS & Probability
- Dynamics 2
- Brit Lit 2

Very tough courses but I did my best and worked hard! I'm still exhausted from the semester.

I also got my first job here at the USA Bookstore. At first i was not sure about it as I had no experience in retail but I love it there! My boss' Ms. Deb is so hilarious and Leon our second boss is even more hilarious! The workers there are great and very friendly. I do enjoy working there.

Overall very fun and good semester!

still surviving...

After a rough day at work and busy week, I received some good news....

Heroes has a VERY good chance of returning with a 5th and final season that will have 13 episodes. Although it is not 100% confirmed it is better than what we have heard, which has been nothing about season 5. Also it might not have that many episodes, I'm sure they will wrap it up pretty well...

It started with "save the cheerleader, save the world," who knows how it will end!

thoughts....

So I have never really wrote a post about what I feeling which is sort of what a blog is for. I like to use it as sharing memories and things that happen rather than feelings but tonight is an exception as I have a lot on my mind, so here...we.....go! [quote from the Dark Knight]

First of all I have noticed a lot of shelfishness around me for some reason. Not sure if its because I'm being selfish, which I believe I am not, or because of an event that happened last week or so with a person being selfish. I won't go into details but this person showed shelfishness in that I needed to go out of my way to serve his/her's needs (which I have met that person's needs for a long time and didn't complain one bit), which might of included spending my own money on something I really didn't need. At the time I didn't think it was that selfish of this to be asked of me, but the more I think about it, the more I realize how selfish it was for this to be asked of me. So this has gotten me to thinking about the term selfish and looking at those around me and seeing who is selfish. Am I selfish?

Secondly, there is a time in everybody's life when we must make a choice between two decisions. One decision is something we would really want and be happy with, and the other choice is something we would really hate but still wouldn't mind having. I have seen in the past as a person I know chose the latter choice. This choice has brought that person happiness at times but grief and hardache at the same time. Most of the time I sense that there is grief and hardache, more than happiness but I have to wonder why the person would deal with that decision when they can go back to the first choice and move on. I might not ever understand this and it blows my mind everyday when I see this person but its their choice. (Side note: This choice did affect me in a small way and I am learning how to deal with it very slowly. It just amazes me that this choice was even made and that is the hardest part to deal with.)

So yeah, that is what is on my mind and that is why I am up at 1 AM, not able to sleep. There are others things but again, I'm not to fond of reading about people's emotions but rather memories so I'm not going to write about those. Until next time.............

LTC (leadership training conference) this weekend....not really looking forward to that. its not that its the conference itself, just bad timing. i would rather sleep in on saturday morning than wake up early to go to a conference and drive back four hours sat evening.

oh well....sometimes in life we must do things we don't want to.

until next time!

busy week.......

Is it really only Wednesday? This morning I'm taking it easy and getting a short break from this hectic week.

Here is a break-down:

Monday: Was called into work so I put in 4 extra hours. Not sure why though because it was the most BORING day I have had at work thus far. Monday night worked on my paper.

Tuesday: This is when the busyness begins. Went to work at 8 AM and didn't sit down the whole, I left at 1:30 PM. We are moving the bookstore to the UCOMM to renovate the old bookstore. Then went to Walmart to get my allergy meds and then came back to my room to finish my paper. Went to Merge then dinner. Edited my paper, went to bed at midnight.

Wednesday: Classes from 9 - 1. Registration for classes at 1 [hope everything works out]. Work from 1 - 5. MET Club meeting at 5. Come back to the room to study for physics test.

Thursday: Lab from 8 - 11. Work from 11 - 1:30. Class. Study for dynamics test.

Friday: Two test. Classes until 3:05. Leave for Leadership Training Conference.

Saturday: Conference until 3. Four hour drive back.

THE END (it makes me sleepy just writing about it)

in a while....

Yeah i know, I haven't posted a blog in a while, sue me. just kidding of course, you won't get much hahahaha.

I haven't blogged in a while because honestly I forget to do it, I'm not really use to it. So a lot has happened in the past month, spring break trip to Guatemala....chilling out with friends....movies.....etc etc.

I will write about Guatemala later, but for now I will write about this past weekend. It has been a good weekend, a stress-less weekend, which is what I needed!

Friday I got out of instrumenation [the worse meteorology class known to man, it is SOOOO useless and boring] and met BJ at the BCM and we sat there for a little bit. We then went back to my place to try to recover the photos I accidentally deleted from Guatemala, no luck. We layed around the place, I took about a 15 minute nap and then we went to get something to eat. We tried the new restaurant (well new to me and him), Tropical Smoothie Cafe. It was alright, a little expensive for the food but the smoothies were good, guess I should of seen that one coming since that is their name. We then went to see 'How to Train Your Dragon' in 3D. It was an alright movie, not the best movie, I probably wont buy it. We then went to our separate rooms and went to bed.

Saturday I woke up at 11:30 and chilled around the room. Cleaned up a little, uploaded photos, did some homework, and washed clothes. I met Kristen about 5ish and we went to Los Arcos where her fellow RAs came and they took a photo of us eating! As Kristen put it, it felt like they were paparazzi and the photo looks like they should be with the paparazzi. It was pretty funny to me. We then went to see 'Alice in Wonderland' in 3D. CRAZY MOVIE!!!!!!! We then came back to my room and looked at photos and stuff, watched the Mighty Ducks....when we could hear it....

Sunday I went to church with BJ and ended up playing piano for the morning service, I haven't played a whole service in a while and I realized how much I missed it. We then went to Foosackley's for lunch with Kristen. I think I'm beinning to like that place....only because of the ranch though lol. Us three then went to Hollywood video to look at what they had left because movies went down to 99 cents!!! Kristen and BJ both got 18 movies, I only got 2. I got 'Marley and Me' and '12 Rounds.' Sad I know. BJ and me then went back to church where I played the whole service again. We are ending the night looking at photos from our long friendship, there are some good memories.

Well thats my weekend, I'm ready for the week now! Until next time, hopefully wont be a month before I write again lol.

Guatemala

GUATEMALA!

A country in mid-america between Mexico and Honduras and El Salvador. A poor country but a country that needs Jesus.

This spring break I will be going with 10 other friends from South, with the BCM, to Guatemala on a mission trip. We are going to be mainly working with kids and doing the following:

- Building little huts
- VBS
- Sports camp for 750 kids
- Handing out food bags

We are very excited and I assure you that because last year over 2,500 photos were taken from about 9 people last year who went! thats a lot of photos! lol.

We will be leaving at 3:20 PM from Mobile to drive to Atlanta and catch a 6 AM flight to Miami with an hour overlay and then fly to Guatemala! busy day Saturday but it will be fun.

Please keep us in your prayers as we travel and do His work in Guatemala!

(I will post an entry about the trip when we get back!)

Valentine's Weekend

This past weekend was great!!

Friday - It SNOWED in Mobile and in Charleston and classes were cancelled (mostly). Kristen, BJ, Morgan, and me played in the ice/snow for a while but it didnt stick to the ground here in Mobile. We started to paint with Shannon and at lunch she let us go and we went to Millry (bj's house), which got around 4 inches of snow and we played, had a snow ball fight, and built two snowmen in the snow. We then enjoyed some taco soup and some chocolate cream cheese cake! YUM! We then headed back and watched most of 'Julie and Julia.'

Saturday - I chilled around the room and worked on SeCAPS stuff and then went to work at the game with Melissa. I then went over to bj's place and played some lego batman which to my surprise, is pretty fun!

Sunday - Valentine's day! Went to church and then went to walmart to get some last minute stuff. Bad mistake, walmart was crazy! I made it out alive and went back to the room and starting getting ready for that night. I baked a funfetti cake and got some sandwhich stuff together. Kristen was supposed to work but ended up not working so she came over and we ate dinner and watched Mrs. Doubtfire. HILARIOUS movie! We exchanged gifts, which she got me 'night at the museum 2' and a tornado chasing book with some pretty cool photos! We ended the evening playing some wii sports.

Overall, very good weekend!

Addicted

For Christmas I got a Wii and since then I can't stop thinking about Mario and the world of Mario, from goombas, to bullet bill, and to dry bones. I believe Mario is the best video game character ever created as the games never get old. They come with new ideas and make old ideas even better with each new console!

Right now the game I keep thinking about is the "New Super Mario Brothers. Wii", a remake of the old super mario brothers from the super nintendo. Kristen, BJ, Braden, Morgan, and me have all had a part in beating it and we are so close! We beat bowser but Peach told mario at the end 'oh mario! did i tell you about the secret world?' WHAT!? After going through 8 worlds and beating bowser, there is still more to do!? Well each level in each world has 3 star coins and you have to get all them to open 8 new levels in world 9! We have all of the coins in worlds 1-6 and a majority of the coins in worlds 7 & 8. We are so close yet so far!

I'm looking at expanding my mario game collection as I only have two thus far (Super Mario Bros., and Super Smash Brothers). Here is a list of the Mario games I have played:
- Mario Kart Wii
- Mario & Sonic @ the Winter Olympic Games
- Mario Party (not on the wii though but its pretty much the same)

So not sure which one I will buy next....

However, here are some of my favorite Mario characters:

Mario - Of course! I will choose him before any other characters

In case you didn't know, I'm addicted to Mario!

Yoshi - He is a little green dinosaur that is very cool!

Lakitu - Usually a bad guy but he can be good too. He has several roles in varios games

Dry Bones - You must be cool to have a name like 'dry bones'

Koopalings - I didn't know who they were until super mario brothers. They are bowser's kids. They have provided a lot of laughter during play with their 'talking'

man, I love mario!

Thoughts Recently....Heroes & BJ

Recently I have had a lot onmy mind and I just gotta let things out!

First of all heroes, the tv show has been on my mind. We are on season 4 now and that season will end two days from now, this upcoming monday!!! There have been several rumors flying around that this could be the last season without heroes because of ratings falling. I hope that there is at least one more season because the plot line is now how I want to end it. Last Monday every character that I liked was either captured or put into some hypnosis thing and they are helpless. There is a character named Samuel on the show who is new this season and I originally liked him but now I don't. He has the ability to move the earth in any form and has gone crazy, he covered a whole town and killed everybody in the town. Now he wants to kill everyone who does not have an ability. So with all of that said, there better be one more season or I will be mad!

Second of all BJ has been on my mind lately as well. He is my best friend and I wouldn't trade him for anything in the world. He took me to the hospital a few weeks ago and I have never felt that much love from a friend before and I don't want to lose him at all! However since then when I hang out with him I see myself doing stuff that I shouldn't be doing, like making fun of him and punching him for no reason...yet he never does that to me, at least punch me. I would go crazy if I didn't have BJ though!

Love Thing

So yeah, I asked my first girlfriend out two weeks ago and it has been one wild ride! We have gone out to eat about three times...Chick-fil-a, O' Charley's, and Sonny's (BBQ). We talk to each other every day either through text, facebook, or in person at the BCM.

My thoughts have been all over the place over the past two weeks but I believe that I made the right decision even though it might of hurt some people's feelings.

I am looking forward to what is coming and to Valentine's Day...the first time i have ever celebrated it.

Measure Friendship

How do you measure friendship?

Do you measure it by a trip to the ER? Working on a brochure together? Playing mario together? Just chilling?

I don't have the answer but I will say that I have some great friends who care and love me.

I would like to thank my best friend BJ though, for taking me to the ER at 12 in the morning after he had gotten back to his place and into his PJs. There is no way I could express my gratitude to him but I'm going to try!

side note....i am feeling better...still not eating too much because bread but i feel good!

Changes All Around

A week from today, AKA last Friday was one CRAZY day!!

To start off the morning I realized that when I walked out that I had left my car at a different dorm area and I had to hitch a ride from my room mate so I was running late. When I got to the BCM I thought I heard somebody call my name or say something but I didn't see anybody. I thought I was going crazy and continued on to what I was doing until I heard my name again and a girl named Morgan was standing there. I walked over and we talked and walked together to the student center. She was telling me that a certain girl liked me and I guessed who it was, it was Kristen Jordan. So I had that on my mind the whole day!

I continued onto class and I got a call from the bookstore on campus about coming in and talking about my hours. I had applied the day before and I didn't think they would already be calling me but I went anyways and talked to the main lady Deb. Ends up that I was being hired at the bookstore, so i got a job last Friday and my first day was yesterday. It is a pretty fun job!

Well the day continued and I decided to call my sister about the whole Kristen thing and talk to her. I told Jo that I was going to ask Kristen out and of course Jo has to give me all of these details about what to do and such. Then she just had to call Mom who told pretty the whole family...things spread very fast! Well later that night Kristen and BJ came over and we played some wii games and cooked some chicken wreath thing. It was good!

I text Kristen after she left and asked if she wanted to go get some lunch the following day, Saturday and she said yes. I asked her out at O' Charleys last Saturday and got my first girlfriend!

So it was a crazy two days and a lot of change but it was a good change. Here are some photos from that experience:

Christmas Break

I find it pretty funny that I'm writing about my Christmas break on the day (technically because it is past midnight) I am leaving to head back to mobile! However I had a great and fun break here in Charleston.

It started off in New Orleans on the 11th when I picked my Mom up and spent the day there and toured around and then the DWBC Christmas Festival on the 13th. We traveled back to Goose Creek and the following Tuesday (one day after we got back) we went to Columbia to see my nephew and niece perform in a school program. After that it was pretty chill, just playing wii and stuff around the house. I rented Mario Kart, that is a pretty fun game!!!

We had family in town from Virginia and my sister stayed at my house. So for a few days it was pretty crazy running around meeting everybody at various locations around the Charleston area.

Well Christmas was getting closer and the Saturday before Christmas we went back up to Columbia with the whole family, including my Dad and Randall, and built a play set for the kids. This was the present from the grandparents on my sister's side to the kids. We spent hours working on that thing and we didn't get to finish it!! Ridiculous! It was finished in the following week and the kids love it!

Christmas rolled around and I played handbells at the Christmas Eve service at my church; I love to play the handbells and really do miss that part of Ridge. Christmas Day we got up and did breakfast and stuff and then opened presents. I got some pretty cool stuff but the highlight of the day was the wii i got! Oh man I was excited because I was considering buying one.

This Wii has been the highlight for the rest of my break. I went ahead and bought "Super Smash Brothers: Brawl" and tried to find "New Super Mario Brothers Wii". The second game was very hard to find. For several days I woke up and went straight to the phone book and called every walmart and best buy in town! I also visited several target stores and game stop stores and could not find this game! One day I was driving Mom around and I told her we were going to stop by the Best Buy and sure enough i found it and it was on sale, 10% off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have enjoyed playing it!

The break has ended with the Passion Conference. The experience of Passion Twenty Ten is blog post in itself and I will probably write about it when I get back to Mobile (the internet is faster as we still have dial up at the house). God truly did speak to me at this conference and changed my life and my views on things.

Well the clothes are done which means that I can head to bed. Overall it has been a great break!
